5 Ways to Work Happy

Labor Day in the U.S. is this weekend. We celebrate work by taking a day off. Seems like if we really loved our work, we’d put in some extra hours instead of taking a day off. (I know. I’m weird.)

But think about it. Kinda makes sense, right?

If you like to do something, you want more of it. If you like ice cream, do you say, “I’m celebrating Ice Cream Day by taking a break from eating it today”?

Surveys of American workers report about two-thirds are dissatisfied to very dissatisfied at work. Guess it makes sense we take a day off to celebrate.

But what about that one-third who are satisfied at work? How do they do it?

Moreover, what can you do to join them so you’re happy at work?

Get started now with these 5 Ways to Work Happy today:

Perceive the Positive
Work isn’t the way it used to be, and probably never was.

Find one positive aspect of your job and focus on it every morning.

Can’t think of anything?

How about this: Did your last payroll check clear and make your mortgage payment?

Focus on it.

Conceive the Positive
Every work culture has negative people—customers, teams, and especially bosses.

I call them Eeyore Vampires. Nothing ever works for them and they’ll suck you dry of every bit of time, energy, and attention you give them.

Avoid them. Like they have the plague…because they do. They drain your attitude of positivity which lowers your morale which decreases your productivity…if you let them.

Run from them to the positive people. You are the average of the five people with whom you associate most.

Believe the Positive
Ever find yourself so mired down in the mundane minutia that you neglect to look up and see where your work is headed?

Imagination is the jet fuel of rapid growth for a positive work culture. How often do you fill the heart of work with this high-octane propellant of innovation and creativity?

Take a few minutes weekly to ask yourself, “Am I going where I want to go?” and “How do I get there from here?”

Engage your imagination to see yourself there.

Achieve the Positive
Your work has a GPS that leads you to the pot of gold at the end of your work culture.

You must “recalculate” often to get there.

Your customers help you recalculate as you listen to their concerns and address them.

Your team members recalculate from mistakes, learn from them, and go make new ones alongside you.

Failure is an experience, not a person.

Make a U-Turn when legal and drive your work culture to greater productivity and profits.

Receive the Positive
The two most powerful words in any language that characterize a positive work culture are “Thank You.”

Be specific in thanking team members for positive behavior.

Deliver gratitude to your community of customers.

Go old school and handwrite a thank you note. The pen is mightier than the sword…and the email and the text message.
