Embracing Diversity for Better Teams

Daralyse Lyons is a journalist, actor, and activist who has written over two dozen full-length books, short stories, and countless articles. A graduate of NYU with a double major in English and Religious Studies and a minor in History, Daralyse is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists. Daralyse is passionate about exposing the painful side of history. Daralyse believes in a world where diversity is celebrated and has made it a mission to stand for a more integrated world.

As a sexually fluid person with relationships and experiences with men and women, Daralyse has found a place amidst many communities attempting to erase Daralyse’s orientation and has been a voice within the darkness. Daralyse’s award-winning children's book, "I'm Mixed!" inspired Daralyse to educate others about embracing all aspects of themselves. Daralyse has since written and spoken extensively on diversity, using their unique background as a Biracial, multiethnic, and sexually fluid woman to foster cross-cultural understanding.

Daralyse Lyons

Author | Demystifying Diversity: Embracing our Shared Humanity

Author: Daralyse is first and foremost a writer. As Daralyse Lyons, she has penned twenty novels, a nonfiction book about healing, two memoirs, a wide variety of articles and numerous short stories. As Maggy Williams, she writes children’s books and young adult literature.

Writing isn’t so much what she does as who she is. Ever since she was five-years-old, she’s been putting pen to paper and getting lost in a world of make-believe.

Speaker & Coach: Over the years, Daralyse’s interests and expertise have evolved and she’s become an avid speaker and transformational life coach, helping people to discover the stories that drive them. Her work rests on the belief that we are all storytellers and that the narratives we tell ourselves and others about who we were, are, and want to be, shape our experiences and, ultimately, our lives. Daralyse works with her clients both individually and in groups to create different narratives that emphasize possibilities over pain and enable them to think of themselves differently and thereby create different futures.

Not all the work Daralyse does is about escaping reality. She is a certified yoga teacher and an Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) practitioner who, after overcoming an eating disorder and other self-destructive patterns of behavior, uses her own healing as a springboard for helping others. When she first began practicing yoga, Daralyse would sit in silence and years of sublimated pain would spring to the surface. She looked, candidly, at that pain and at her history of trauma, disordered eating, depression and suicidal ideation, then began to apply the Emotional Freedom Technique to resolve the feelings and fears that arose “on the mat.” Based on her positive results of combining yoga and EFT on herself, she created Emotional Yoga (EY), a groundbreaking healing modality. She works with private clients, facilitates workshops, writes articles and blogs, performs remote EY work, crafts individual EY session scripts, teaches conventional yoga, practices EFT, and engages in the intensely personal work of training others to be EY practitioners.

Actress: In addition to her behind-the-scene endeavors, Daralyse is a talented actress with a background in theatre and comedy improvisation. In her youth, she enjoyed such iconic roles as Beatrice (in “Much Ado About Nothing”), Lady Capulet (in “Romeo and Juliet”), and Lady Macbeth (in “Macbeth”). But her training extends far beyond the classics. She stole the show as the Baroness Schrader (in “The Sound of Music”) and was a shamelessly singing (off-key) landlady in Michael Gene Sullivan’s adaptation of George Orwell’s 1984. After performing as a theatrical actress, Daralyse traded her dramatic aspirations for more comedic ones. Since relocating to Philadelphia in 2010, she has become an avid improvisational artist.
